LADY OF THE LAKE

He is twelve year's old - barely pubescent. From his perch in a tree he views this spectacle. She is his magical Lady of the Lake. Not sure she is real or an apparition, he squeezes his eyes shut and opens them abruptly. She is still there. He stares. He reckons she must be immortal. The boy fantasizes that she will take him deep into the lakes depths and raise him as she did Sir Lancelot for a life of romance and adventure. The legends told him that the ancient Celts worshiped water and the sheer power of the goddesses, nymphs and faeries that lived within. We throw coins into wishing wells, and refer to the Lady of the Lake as "Lady Luck". He reaches into his pocket for his lunch money and throws it into the water. With the splash, she vanishes. Only the mist remains.....

instantly his stomach lurches and feels queasy as the adrenaline rushes through his system. It can't be, she can't be gone!

But, she was. The curious lad descends from his perch and anxiously yet with great caution approaches the edge of the lake for a closer look....

But there are other things that live in the lake besides the enchanted lady. These things are there to protect the mistress of the lake and the magic that dwells in it. When he threw the coins he stirred something with-in the depths of the waters. Another form started to rise out of the water! Not beautiful like the lady but a hulking mass, dark and wicked. What had he unleashed?...

The thing roared above the water line, towering over the boy. Then, in a flash, it descended upon him and covered his body with its slimy mass, yanking the boy from his comfortable, middle-class, suburban existence into the murky depths of the lake never to be seen or heard from again. But the boy soon realized that he wasn't dead; indeed, his body had instantly adapted to the new and strange underwater world, a world of bizarre beings and strange happenings...

He was amazed to find a world existed under the surface of the lake that went on mostly oblivious to the world above. And the surface of the lake seemed no more than the sky above seems to us who dwell on the earth. He hadn't long to think about how or why he was able to be in the water and not drown, because he was quit suddenly aware of a great turbulence approaching. He jumped behind a large rock and peered out as the swirling waters engulfed him.

Just as the wheels on the bus go round-n-round, so did his twisting body. With hands to his face protecting his head and eyes, the boy peered between his fingers to see something so grotesque, so mangled, that he gasped....sucking the mirky water deep into his lungs. Unable to drown, his nightmare continued......

The boy momentarily lost consciousness. He blinked his eyes, only to see his body lying lifeless below. Had he died? The boy floated toward a light in another part of the lake; it was as if an unknown force was pulling him, calling him. As the boy floated along peacefully, he came to bright lights--a virtual aquatic paradise. The lady of the lake sat calmly for the boy, waiting. As the boy approached, the lady said to him, "You must understand, the soul is not eternal. You will take my place here, as I will fade away. It will be your job to get another here. It is the only way..." The boy winced...

He was dreaming, it was the only logical explanation. he slapped himself trying to wake himself up.

"Are you taking this in, my dear"

"But how do I sleep?, drink? eat!, how do I eat?"

she gave him a look, this look calmed him down and gave him time to think to himself. He was not only amazed that he could live and breathe under the surface of the lake, but also by her beauty, she literally lit up the lake.

"Soon I will be gone, then it is your job to look after the lake, then, when this time comes for you to, you will have to choose a successor, like I have chosen you"

"bbbut".

she was gone. Like the first time they met. Melted away in to the moon light...

The moonlight reflected in the water as he stood there alone. He crossed his arm and shut his eyes and thought for a brief moment. He knew who would love to share this with him, His close friend Meagan. So he called for the creature that brought him here to go and find his friend and bring her to the lake. A huge smile was plastid on his face as her thought of the fun that they would have together in this new world of his. He started to work making everything perfect for her, her even went as far as making a crown from the glittering rocks at the bottom of the lake. You could see that she was no friend, but more of a school boy’s crush
